Cruising

Weymouth Sailing Club is ideally situated to explore the cruising grounds of the spectacular Jurassic Coast, the Solent and beyond.

We have a thriving Cruising community with the option of Cruising in Company on club organised trips, or setting off under your own steam on independent cruises. Winter talks and socials keep the cruising interest afloat during the off season.

There are scheduled cruising days, May – September and Weymouth sailing Club has the largest number of Cruisers in the area, so a great opportunities for crew to join in.

To the East, Swanage, Poole Harbour and Yarmouth or Lymington in the Solent are all within a comfortable days passage. To the West, a days sail across Lyme Bay via Portland Bill’s inshore or offshore passages will see you to Brixham or Dartmouth, the gateway for exploring the South West coast and Isles of Scilly. To the South a channel crossing to Cherbourg or the Channel Islands is very rewarding or perhaps just a lazy day sailing around Weymouth Bay, Portland harbour or Lulworth Cove.

Racing

Once a member of Weymouth Sailing Club there are many opportunities to learn or gain more experience racing across all types of dinghies, squibs and keel boats. We race under the IRC rating system with classes 3,4 and 5 so there is plenty of scope to hone your racing skills. Members can subscribe to a crew list with their level of experience and options.

Regattas

Regattas are popular events in Weymouth Bay with its prevailing South Westerlies giving the bay slight to moderate seas, easy race course access and the ability to set a variety of courses. Regattas are organised by the Yacht Clubs of Weymouth (YCW), coordinating the volunteers and facilities from local sailing organisations across Weymouth Sailing Club, Castle Cove Sailing Club, Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, Royal Dorset Yacht Club and RSNA Portland.

The club also offers on shore facilities for the visiting teams from changing rooms to the bar and restaurant where the days celebrations can be enjoyed. The safe waters of Weymouth Bay played host the the 2012 Olympics and are testament to the great racing that can be had in Weymouth Bay. Weymouth town has an array of hotels, hostelries and restaurants to support competitors on shore.

Youths on Board (YOBs)

Bringing youngsters together from all backgrounds with a common interest in the sea to have fun learning to sail. YOBs is run by a dedicated team of qualified instructors, including a club welfare officer, teaching youngsters in the safe waters of Weymouth Bay with oversight by a qualified safety team.

The group is open for young sailors aged 9 to 18 years old. Sailing courses and racing markers are set up around Weymouth Bay, supervised by the Weymouth Sailing Club safety RHIB. We have a fleet of boats to use – Fevas, Larks and Opis. We provide buoyancy aids and wetsuits, as well as offer kit to purchase through a second hand stall. Ability to swim is essential.

Over the winter months we meet monthly with trips to Coast Watch, Portland Port and Osprey Pool Assault Course.

Welcoming new recruits as YOBs or helpers. Please contact yobs@wsc.org.uk.
