Weymouth Sailing Club was founded in 1913 with its principal objective to “promote and encourage amateur boat sailing in the Port of Weymouth, its adjacent waters and the association of ladies and gentlemen interested in boat sailing.”
Weymouth Sailing Club is a volunteer run and charitable organisation. Members have a variety of nautical interests from yacht racing and cruising to dinghy racing and sailing. There is an active racing programme from April to the final race of the season on Boxing Day. Cruising is also encouraged through ‘cruises in company’ and cruising log trophies. Each mid-summer we race to Cherbourg as well as hosting a reciprocal visit from Cherbourg Yacht Club.
As an RYA recognised training establishment, we are able to offer training at all levels for members.
Ashore, Weymouth Sailing Club is one of the most popular and attractive locations in the country with a reputation for welcoming visiting yachts, regattas and ‘Open’ events for dinghies and keelboats. We host social events throughout the year including dinners, quizzes, out of season walks and guest speakers. The Galley provides good quality dining and after race refreshments.
Over the years the clubhouse and yards have been developed to provide a dinghy park and slipway and a mast store with hardstanding for yachts during the winter.
Moorings have been created for Squibs and cruisers and in 2019 new walk ashore pontoons were added. Equipment to lift boats out of the water has increased in capacity and sophistication including an 9-tonne Heila crane purchased with funds raised by hosting the French and New Zealand teams in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. During the Olympics we were hosts to the British team and their families. In 2017 Weymouth Rowing Club were welcomed as associate members and in 2018 the club became a registered charity with similar aims to our 1913 founders.
